Furniture & Birthmarks (For the three of you interested…)

(Those three being the 3 M’s, I’m guessing: Melissa, Melinda, and Megan.)

My sister, Melissa, said that the post about getting my cousin’s furniture made her cry, since it was also about our aunt and grandmother. “But I was hoping to see pictures of the NEW furniture,” she added. Yes, pictures would have been a perfect addition to that particular post, but it wouldn’t have been pretty. That’s because everything that belonged in these new (to me) pieces was strewn all over this particular room along with remnants of meals that the kids tried to squeeze in at the table that was also covered with stuff. Well I’ve been home 5 days now and have managed to get things somewhat in order, so here goes.

There is this long buffet to the left that is now filled with tablecloths, cloth napkins, and silverware, the china cabinet in the middle, and then a smaller buffet to the right. The table is still the one that belonged to my grandmother, because this one has not sold yet. Also because it has a veneer top that is absolutely indestructible, and the new table (waiting in the basement) has a beautiful real-wood top. That is a scary thought to me since we eat every meal here and do our Math as well!
I don’t know if you can see the line that goes through the middle of the smaller buffet – directly under the flowers, but it is there because the top opens up like shutters and each piece can rest on a pull-out handle to each side, making the serving surface area longer. Opening the top in that fashion also reveals a black surface in the middle which allows for serving hot dishes. Pretty fancy, huh?
I told my friend Christie, when I showed it all to her yesterday, that when I see the china cabinet, I feel like I’m walking through the Dillard’s China Department ( maybe the 3 M’s and Christie are the only ones who even know what Dillard’s is!?!?!) where I registered for this china over 18 years ago. I actually registered for a completely different Lenox pattern, got 10 place settings of that pattern as gifts, changed my mind about what pattern I liked best after the honeymoon, and then took ALL 10 place settings back to exchange them for these! Many thought I had lost my mind to go through the trouble, but I am SO happy I did. I love this Lenox “Liberty” china, and seeing it on display in this cabinet takes me back to the Dillard’s wedding registry of 18 years ago. The cabinet has thick glass shelves, lights, and lots of room to beautifully display these and other precious gifts given to me – like two Waterford Crystal bowls, Lenox crystal stemware, and silver tea sets and platters.

So there you have it – tour of dining room filled with new furniture.

Now, I should warn you about this next “birthmark” part of the post. It contains some semi-graphic photos. If you are squeamish about medical procedures, then you’ll probably want to stop right here! 🙂

Some of you (the same three) may know that Kory has had this birthmark since he was born. His pediatrician has told us all along that he would need to get it removed sometime before he started shaving. I remember thinking, “Shaving? He’s only three years old!” Well, as a familiar mommy-wisdom-quote goes, that my friend Sara passed along to me once…”The days pass slowly, but the years go by quickly.” And so the day finally arrived. Very quickly, it seemed.
The pediatrician also recommended that we have a plastic surgeon perform this procedure, and not a dermatologist. The appointment was at 9am yesterday, local anesthetic, and only took about 25 minutes. I was a little nervous about it being in such a tender, vulnerable spot. (Aren’t there major arteries in the vicinity?) But, Kory did great, and I was thankful that things went so smoothly. Afterward, we went to a favorite little cafe of ours and got iced coffee (me) and tea (Kory) as well as one of these amazing gluten free chocolate-raspberry cupcakes.
He graciously complied with these photos. I think it was partly because he was relieved, too, and also that now he has a super cool battle wound to show off!

Apologies to all but the three of you.
