Actually, he is still alive and well, the one who spoke these words numerous times in a variety of ways in the last two weeks….
“Mom, why would you want to ruin my life over a little thing called math????”
or
“Is ruining my life what you really want to do, Mom? Over math? Really?”
If you consider having to re-do missed problems a life ruining event, you might be in for some real devastation in the future.
I like this mom’s explanation for the need for accuracy in math, and my fifth grade teacher used to repeatedly quote the famous, “‘Close’ only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” It makes more sense to me all the time.
We are finishing school this week, but this child won’t be the most relieved.
That person will be me!
My eleven year old doesn’t believe math is ruining his life, but certainly he believes it’s ruining part of his mornings. 😉 He’s generally not a sulky child, but if he continues sighing at me the way he’s been doing for the past week or two, I’m going to point out to him that he could be cleaning out the goats’ barn stall instead. If one does not wish to become educated, then one should accept that one’s life may be one long series of shoveling… nasty stuff. 🙂
Good word. Education is indeed a gift, an opportunity, a privilege – hadn’t thought of it that way in a while.
haha. those words are very familiar. 🙂 thanks for being an example of excellence, mel. 🙂
